How do I know when to make an APS referral? Do I need proof of the abuse?
No. You do not need proof to make an APS referral. If anyone suspects that there is Abuse, Neglect, Self-Neglect or Exploitation of an elderly person, a report should be made to the County Job and Family Services in the county of the alleged victim. When people report their suspicions, APS can then make contact with the alleged victim and assess the situation as to any type of danger in their present environment. Sometimes the alleged abuses reported are not observed at the time of the initial home visit. But by making contact with the alleged victim and viewing the environment other abuses may be identified and curtailed.
